Tips for a great word scramble maker

A word scramble (also called a word jumble) mixes up the letters of each word and asks the solver to put them back in order. It is quick to make, quick to solve and works for every age: spelling lists for second graders, science terms for middle school, and party games for baby and bridal showers.

This maker never leaves a word unscrambled, keeps as few letters as possible in their original place and checks that a jumble never spells something rude by accident. Phrases are scrambled word by word, so "ice cream" stays two words. Add a clue after a dash to make a word easier, or keep the first letter in place as a hint.

Print or save as PDF for the worksheet on page 1 and the answer key on page 2. Students can also solve it online: each word gets an answer box, and Check shows which answers are right.

How to make a crossword puzzle

  1. Type your words and clues. Enter a title, then one answer per line followed by a dash and its clue, like "Whale - Largest animal on Earth". Up to 40 words.
  2. Let the maker build the grid. Every word is connected to the others, the squares are numbered and the Across and Down clue lists are written for you. Click New layout for another arrangement.
  3. Choose the options. Add a word bank, show or hide letter counts, or switch to Word scramble mode to turn the same list into an unscramble worksheet.
  4. Print, save or play. Click Print / Save PDF for the puzzle on page 1 and the answer key on page 2, download a PNG, or click Play online and Check answers.
