Party games can be awkward: some guests don't want to perform, others don't know anyone, and the room might be full of different ages. A word search avoids all of that. Everyone gets a sheet and a pen, plays at their own pace, and the competition is gentle. It's especially popular at baby showers and bridal showers, but it works just as well at birthdays, holiday parties and family reunions.
The basic game
- Print one puzzle per guest (plus a few spares) and one answer key for the host.
- Hand out puzzles and pens as guests sit down, face down.
- Say "go" and start a timer — usually 5 minutes.
- When time is up, the guest with the most words wins. If someone finds every word before the timer, they shout and win immediately.
- Check the winner's sheet against the answer key and hand over the prize.
That's it. The whole game takes ten minutes, including the instructions.
Baby showers
Baby shower word searches use words like BOTTLE, RATTLE, STROLLER and LULLABY. A few ways to make the game more personal:
- Add baby-specific words: the nursery theme, the due month, the parents' names.
- Baby name ideas: if the parents are sharing name ideas, hide the shortlist and let guests vote for their favorite afterwards.
- Two difficulty levels: give the easier version to children and older relatives, the harder one to competitive friends.
Our baby shower word search is ready to print, or start from it in the maker and add your own words. For a gender reveal, a hidden message word search can spell IT'S A GIRL or IT'S A BOY in the leftover letters.
Bridal showers and bachelorette parties
Classic bridal shower words — BOUQUET, VEIL, CHAMPAGNE, HONEYMOON — make a good base. Personalize with the couple's names, where they met, the wedding venue, their pet's name or the honeymoon destination. Personal words are the ones guests talk about. The bridal shower word search includes 18 wedding words and an answer key.
Birthday parties
For children's parties, word searches are a perfect "arrival activity" while you wait for everyone to show up: it keeps early guests busy without needing an adult to lead. Use the easy version for under-7s and add the birthday child's name and the party theme (dinosaurs, space, unicorns). For adult birthdays, a decade theme — songs, toys and slang from the year they were born — is always a hit.
Holiday parties
Holiday word searches are a calm activity for classroom parties and family gatherings. Popular choices:
- Halloween — while costumes are judged.
- Thanksgiving — at the kids' table before dinner.
- Christmas — rolled into crackers or stockings.
- New Year — to fill the wait until midnight.
Variations that keep it fun
- Team play: pairs or tables solve together. Good when guests don't know each other — it starts conversations.
- Mystery word: hide one extra word that isn't on the list (the baby's name, the wedding date month). Whoever finds it gets a bonus prize.
- Relay: each team member must find one word before passing the sheet on.
- Play online: for virtual showers, send everyone the same puzzle link. Our puzzles have a Play online mode with a timer, so guests can share their times in the chat.
Making a custom party puzzle in five minutes
- Write 12–18 words. Mix classic theme words with three or four personal ones — names, places, inside jokes. Personal words get the biggest reactions.
- Pick the difficulty for the crowd. Medium suits mixed ages; Hard suits a competitive group of adults. If grandparents are playing, keep the grid to 15 × 15 or smaller so the letters print large.
- Add a title such as "Emma & Jack's Bridal Shower" — it doubles as a keepsake.
- Test it once. Solve it yourself and note how long it takes; set the party timer to about two-thirds of your time.
- Print the puzzle and the key. The key prints on page 2, so print it once and the puzzle as many times as you need.
Prizes and practical tips
- Small prizes work best: candles, chocolates, a plant, a coffee gift card.
- Print at 100% scale so letters stay large for everyone.
- Bring pens, not pencils — they're easier to see when you check answers.
- Keep the answer key folded in your pocket for disputes.
- Print two or three spares for late arrivals and children who want to join.
