Scarf yarn requirements
An adult scarf is typically 7–8 inches wide and 60–70 inches long (18–20 × 150–180 cm) before fringe. A long "super scarf" wraps twice around the neck at about 10 × 84 inches, an infinity scarf is a loop of about 12 × 60 inches, and a cowl is a short loop of about 10 × 26 inches.
A worsted weight adult scarf in garter stitch needs roughly 450 yards (three 200-yard skeins, or two if you skip the safety margin); in half double crochet about 550. Bulky yarn finishes faster with about 330 yards, and super bulky with about 220 yards — often a single big ball.
Garter stitch and ribbing are the classic choices for knitted scarves because both sides look good and the edges do not curl. Stockinette curls badly unless it has a garter or seed border. For fringe, add about 1 yard per 12 strands of 9-inch fringe, or 10% for a full fringe at both ends.

About these numbers: estimates assume typical gauge for each yarn weight. Your tension, hook or needle size and stitch pattern can move them by ±15% or more — weigh a swatch in the swatch calculator for a figure based on your own work.
Tips
- Adult scarf: 7–8 × 60–70 in
- Worsted garter: ~450 yd with 10% extra
- Add ~10% for fringe on both ends
- Garter, seed and ribbing don't curl
How to work out how much yarn you need
- Choose the project. Pick knit or crochet, the project and its size — or a custom width and length.
- Set the yarn. Choose the yarn weight (CYC 0–7) and stitch, then type the length and grams from your skein label.
- Add a safety margin. Keep 10% extra, or more for tight tension, borders and fringe.
- Check with a swatch. For the most accurate number, weigh a blocked swatch in the From a swatch tab and scale it to your project.
