Medium format (44×33) depth of field & hyperfocal charts

Digital medium format (about 43.8 × 32.9 mm) — Fujifilm GFX, Hasselblad X and Pentax 645 — has a crop factor of 0.79×: the sensor is larger than full frame. It uses a 0.038 mm circle of confusion for depth of field.

With a 63 mm lens at f/2.8 on medium format focused at 3.00 m, everything from 2.78 m to 3.26 m is acceptably sharp: 48 cm of depth of field.

About the Medium Format format

Focal lengths look wider than on full frame: a 63 mm lens frames like 50 mm and a 110 mm like 87 mm. At the same framing and f-number depth of field is about two-thirds of a stop shallower than full frame, which, together with very high resolution, gives medium format its distinctive three-dimensional look.

The circle of confusion is 0.038 mm by the standard print convention, but with 100 MP sensors most landscape photographers work to a much smaller value, stopping down to f/8–f/11 and focus stacking where needed.

Equivalent focal length and aperture

Multiply by 0.79 to compare with full frame. The aperture equivalent describes depth of field and total light; exposure settings do not change.

FAQ

What is the crop factor of a Medium Format sensor?

0.79×. The 43.8 × 32.9 mm sensor has a 54.8 mm diagonal, compared with 43.3 mm for full frame, so a 63 mm lens frames like 50 mm on full frame.

What circle of confusion should I use for Medium Format?

0.038 mm, the sensor diagonal divided by 1443 — the same convention as lens depth of field scales and DOFMaster. Use about half (0.019 mm) if you view images at 100% or print very large.

What is the hyperfocal distance of a 23 mm lens on Medium Format?

1.76 m (5.78 ft) at f/8. Focus there and everything from half that distance to infinity is acceptably sharp.

How long can I expose the night sky on Medium Format?

With a 23 mm lens at f/2.8 and 100 MP (pixel pitch 3.8 µm), about 9.2 s by the NPF rule, or 28 s by the 500 rule.
