BPM for running: match songs to your pace
Running in time with music feels easier when each step lands on a beat. Your cadence — steps per minute — is the song BPM to look for. It depends on your pace and your step length.
How it is calculated
Speed in metres per minute divided by step length gives steps per minute: cadence = (1000 ÷ step length) ÷ (pace in minutes per km). A step is one foot strike (half a stride). Typical running step lengths are 0.9–1.3 m, increasing with speed and height; if you know your cadence from a watch, use it directly and skip the maths.

Songs at half the tempo work too
A song at 85 BPM with a strong backbeat feels like 170 when you run two steps per beat, so hip-hop and slower pop can fit a fast cadence. When you check your playlist with the batch BPM analyzer, set Tempo range to 120–240 to see every track at running tempo, then look for ones within a few BPM of your cadence. To train a higher cadence, raise the playlist tempo by about 5 % at a time.
For a click at an exact cadence instead of music, any metronome set to your steps per minute will do. To get exact tempos for songs, use the BPM detector.
