101 capacitor: 100 pF
A capacitor marked 101 has a capacitance of 100 pF. The first two digits (10) are the value in picofarads and the last digit (1) is the number of zeros to add.
101 in every unit
| Picofarads | 100 pF |
|---|---|
| Nanofarads | 0.1 nF |
| Microfarads | 0.0001 µF |
| Farads | 1.0 × 10^-10 |
How to read 101
- Take the first two digits: 10.
- Add 1 zero: 100 pF.
- Convert: 100 pF ÷ 1,000 = 0.1 nF; ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.0001 µF.

Typical uses
100 pF capacitors filter high-frequency noise on signal lines, stabilise op-amp feedback loops and appear in RF matching networks.

FAQ
What is the value of a 101 capacitor?
100 pF: 10 × 10^1 pF = 100 pF.
What does 101J, 101K or 101M mean?
The letter is the tolerance: J = ±5%, K = ±10%, M = ±20%. The value is still 100 pF.
Can I replace a 101 capacitor with a different type?
Usually, if the capacitance, voltage rating and temperature characteristic are at least as good. Check the rated voltage, and remember ceramic capacitors lose capacitance at high DC voltage.
