Standard resistor values
Resistors are made in preferred values from the IEC 60063 E-series. Type any resistance to find the nearest standard value in the series you stock, with the values just below and above it.
What the E-series are
Each E-series divides a decade (for example 100 Ω to 1 kΩ) into a fixed number of steps spaced by the same ratio: E12 has 12 values per decade, each about 21% (the twelfth root of 10) above the last. The spacing matches the tolerance, so the ranges of neighbouring ±10% E12 parts meet and any resistance is covered by some part. Multiply the base numbers by 0.1, 1, 10, 100… to get every value: E12 contains 4.7 Ω, 47 Ω, 470 Ω, 4.7 kΩ, 47 kΩ and so on.
| Series | Values per decade | Typical tolerance |
|---|---|---|
| E3 | 3 | ±>20% |
| E6 | 6 | ±20% |
| E12 | 12 | ±10% |
| E24 | 24 | ±5% |
| E48 | 48 | ±2% |
| E96 | 96 | ±1% |
| E192 | 192 | ±0.5% and better |

The E24 series keeps eight historical values (2.7, 3.0, 3.3, 3.6, 3.9, 4.3, 4.7 and 8.2) that differ from the pure formula, and E192 uses 9.20 where the formula gives 9.19. Read why in E-series standard values explained, or see every common value with its color code on the resistor values page.
FAQ
Why is there no 5k resistor?
5 kΩ is not in E12 or E24. The nearest E24 values are 4.7 kΩ and 5.1 kΩ; 4.99 kΩ is in E96. You can also make exactly 5 kΩ from two resistors, e.g. 4.7 kΩ + 300 Ω in series.
What are the E12 resistor values?
1.0, 1.2, 1.5, 1.8, 2.2, 2.7, 3.3, 3.9, 4.7, 5.6, 6.8 and 8.2, multiplied by any power of ten.
Which E-series should I stock?
E12 covers most hobby needs; E24 adds in-between values like 5.1 kΩ and 7.5 kΩ. E96 is for 1% precision work such as dividers that set regulator voltages.
