How long is 1 kg of ASA filament?

A 1 kg spool of 1.75 mm ASA is about 388.6 m long; a kilogram of 2.85 mm ASA is about 146.5 m. That uses a density of 1.07 g/cm³. Convert any weight or length below.

Which density this page uses

ASA datasheets range from about 1.05 to 1.13 g/cm³ depending on the brand; we use 1.07 g/cm³. Like ABS, it is light, so a kilogram is long. Every number on this page is computed from 1.07 g/cm³; if your spool lists a different density, choose the closest material or scale the result: length is inversely proportional to density, so a material 3% denser gives 3% fewer meters per kilogram.

Net weight is the filament only — the empty spool comes on top. Not every brand sells every size in ASA; the table simply converts the weight on the label.

How diameter tolerance changes the length

Filament is sold by weight, so a spool that runs slightly thick holds fewer meters, and one that runs thin holds more. Length scales with 1 ÷ diameter², so small diameter errors matter roughly twice as much in length:

ToleranceDiameter1 kg isLength change
1.75 ± 0.02 mm1.73–1.77 mm380–398 m−2.2% / +2.3%
1.75 ± 0.05 mm1.70–1.80 mm367–412 m−5.5% / +6.0%
2.85 ± 0.05 mm2.80–2.90 mm141–152 m−3.4% / +3.6%

Good filament is typically specified at ±0.02–0.03 mm and budget filament at ±0.05 mm. Your slicer assumes the nominal diameter, so a consistently thick spool also over-extrudes by the same percentage; if you measure an average diameter well away from nominal, enter it in the slicer's filament settings.

About ASA spools

ASA prints much like ABS but resists UV and weathering, which makes it the usual choice for outdoor parts. Its density is close to ABS, so a kilogram gives almost as many meters — noticeably more than PLA or PETG.

Because ASA datasheets vary more than most (some brands list over 1.1 g/cm³), check your spool label if you need an exact length; the calculator accepts any material in the list and the formula below works for any density.

The formula, worked for ASA

length = mass ÷ (density × π × (diameter ÷ 2)²)

1,000 g ÷ 1.07 g/cm³ = 934.6 cm³ = 934,579 mm³ of plastic. A 1.75 mm filament has a cross-section of π × 0.875² = 2.405 mm², so the length is 934,579 ÷ 2.405 = 388,553 mm, or 388.6 m. With 2.85 mm filament (6.379 mm²) it is 146.5 m.

FAQ

How long is 1 kg of ASA filament?

About 389 m of 1.75 mm ASA or 146 m of 2.85 mm filament, at a density of 1.07 g/cm³.

How much does 1 meter of ASA filament weigh?

About 2.57 g for 1.75 mm and 6.83 g for 2.85 mm, so 10 m of 1.75 mm ASA is about 25.7 g.

How many meters are on a 500 g or 3 kg spool of ASA?

A 500 g spool of 1.75 mm ASA holds about 194 m; a 3 kg spool about 1,166 m. In 2.85 mm the same spools hold about 73 m and 439 m.

What does ASA filament cost per meter?

At $25.00 per kg, 1.75 mm ASA costs 6.4¢ per meter and 2.5¢ per gram; 2.85 mm costs 17.1¢ per meter.
