Sony ZV-E10 crop factor: 1.53×

The ZV-E10 is Sony’s vlogging-focused APS-C camera: the same 1.53× sensor size as the a6400 in a body built around a flip-out screen and video features. Its 23.5 × 15.6 mm sensor has a 28.21 mm diagonal, so lenses frame 1.53× tighter than on full frame.

A 11 mm lens on APS-C (1.53× crop) frames like a 17 mm lens on full frame. At f/1.8 it gives the depth of field of about f/2.8 there — but exposure stays the same as f/1.8.

Sensor size and crop factor

Crop factor is the full-frame diagonal (43.27 mm) divided by the sensor diagonal. For the ZV-E10: √(23.5² + 15.6²) = 28.21 mm, and 43.27 ÷ 28.21 = 1.53.

Equivalent focal length and aperture for Sony E lenses

The full-frame equivalent is the focal length × 1.53. The DoF-equivalent aperture (f-number × 1.53) describes depth of field and total light at the same framing; exposure — shutter speed and ISO — is set by the real f-number as usual. Hyperfocal distances use a 0.020 mm circle of confusion.

What is different about the ZV-E10

For vlogging the crop factor is the whole story. Held at arm’s length, a face and some background need roughly a 20–24 mm full-frame field of view. The kit zoom’s 16 mm wide end is only a 24.5 mm equivalent, so many ZV-E10 owners add the E 11mm f/1.8 (about 17 mm equivalent) or the E PZ 10–20mm f/4 G (about 15–31 mm).

The ZV-E10 has no in-body stabilisation. Its electronic "Active" stabilisation in video works by cropping into the frame, which makes every lens look longer still — another reason to start wider than you think. The later ZV-E10 II uses a different 26 MP sensor; check its own published size before reusing these numbers for it.

FAQ

What is the crop factor of the Sony ZV-E10?

1.53×. The 23.5 × 15.6 mm sensor has a 28.21 mm diagonal, and 43.27 ÷ 28.21 = 1.53. The maker rounds it to 1.5×.

What is the full-frame equivalent of the Sony E PZ 16–50mm f/3.5–5.6 OSS?

24–77 mm in field of view, with the depth of field of about f/5.4–f/8.6 on full frame. Exposure does not change: f/3.5 still needs the same shutter speed and ISO as f/3.5 on any camera.

What does the Sony E 11mm f/1.8 equal on full frame?

About 17 mm f/2.8: the field of view of a 17 mm lens and the depth of field of f/2.8 on full frame. Its hyperfocal distance at f/8 on the ZV-E10 is 77 cm (2.52 ft).

What is the best wide lens for vlogging on the ZV-E10?

Anything that gives about 15–18 mm on the camera, i.e. 23–28 mm equivalent or wider before any stabilisation crop. The E 11mm f/1.8 frames like a 17 mm lens and blurs the background like f/2.8 on full frame; the E PZ 10–20mm f/4 G adds a power zoom from 15 to 31 mm equivalent.
