Tips for christmas stocking patterns
A personalised stocking is a Christmas tradition many families keep for decades, and the name cuff is the part everyone looks at. This page draws a complete stocking chart from a name: a cuff band with the name, a leg and foot shape with a rounded toe and heel, snowflakes, a small tree and an optional year near the foot.
Short names (up to five letters) are drawn at double height so they read from across the room; longer names use the normal 7-stitch alphabet and the cuff grows wider to fit. The stocking shape scales with the name so letters never touch the edges of the cuff.
The body is a solid block of colour, which is a lot of stitching: the example above has 4,672 body stitches out of 5,769. If that is more than you want to stitch, leave the body unstitched (click its colour in the floss list) and stitch only the cuff, then sew it onto a ready-made felt stocking.
Recommended settings
- Names up to 5 letters print double size
- Cuff only = a quick weekend project
- 14-count Aida or 28-count evenweave
- Order 2–3 skeins of the body colour
Size
With the eight-letter example name the chart is 79 × 97 stitches — 5.6 × 6.9 in (14.3 × 17.6 cm) on 14-count Aida. That makes a small stocking or a large ornament; for a bigger hanging stocking stitch it on 11-count Aida (7.2 × 8.8 in) and add a fabric backing, or stitch only the cuff and attach it to a larger ready-made stocking.
| Fabric | Finished size | Metric | Fabric to cut (+3 in / 8 cm each side) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11-count Aida | 7.2 × 8.8 in | 18.2 × 22.4 cm | 13.2 × 14.8 in (34 × 38 cm) |
| 14-count Aida | 5.6 × 6.9 in | 14.3 × 17.6 cm | 11.6 × 12.9 in (30 × 34 cm) |
| 16-count Aida | 4.9 × 6.1 in | 12.5 × 15.4 cm | 10.9 × 12.1 in (29 × 31 cm) |
| 18-count Aida | 4.4 × 5.4 in | 11.1 × 13.7 cm | 10.4 × 11.4 in (27 × 30 cm) |
| 28-count evenweave (over 2) | 5.6 × 6.9 in | 14.3 × 17.6 cm | 11.6 × 12.9 in (30 × 34 cm) |
Colours
Red and white (DMC 321 with B5200 snow white) is the classic. Green and red (699 with 321 lettering and 3865 winter white snowflakes) and navy with silver (931 with 3865 and 3072) suit a family where each person gets their own colour. Use the same palette for every stocking in a set so they look like they belong together.
| Palette | Body | Cuff | Text | Accent |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Red & white | DMC 321 Red | DMC B5200 Snow White | DMC 498 Red Dark | DMC B5200 Snow White |
| Green & red | DMC 699 Green | DMC B5200 Snow White | DMC 321 Red | DMC 3865 Winter White |
| Navy & silver | DMC 931 Antique Blue Medium | DMC 3865 Winter White | DMC 931 Antique Blue Medium | DMC 3072 Beaver Gray Vy Lt |
The example chart uses 3 colours and 5,769 full stitches: 4,672 in DMC 321, 965 in DMC B5200, 132 in DMC 498. Every colour needs one skein or less except large filled areas — the floss list under the tool gives the exact skein count for your fabric.
Layout
Stitch the name on the cuff first, centred on the cuff's middle column. Then stitch the body outline row by row and fill it in; the snowflakes and tree are worked in the accent colour inside the body. Leave at least 2 in (5 cm) of fabric around the shape for the seam allowance when you sew the front to a backing.
Once the chart is ready, see how to transfer a cross stitch pattern onto fabric for centring and gridding, and the metric size calculator to plan frames in centimetres.

- Clean up. Keep Remove confetti on Light or Strong, adjust brightness or contrast, and click colors in the floss list to leave them unstitched.
- Print or save. Click Print / Save PDF for a cover page with floss list plus numbered symbol chart pages, or download a PNG chart.
FAQ
How do I make a christmas stocking cross stitch pattern?
A personalised stocking is a Christmas tradition many families keep for decades, and the name cuff is the part everyone looks at. This page draws a complete stocking chart from a name: a cuff band with the name, a leg and foot shape with a rounded toe and heel, snowflakes, a small tree and an optional year near the foot.
Can I change the font or add my own motif?
The maker uses one clean 5 × 7 stitch alphabet. To add your own motif or a different font, download the PNG chart, edit it in any pixel editor and upload it again — or add the motif by hand on the printed chart.
Will the text colours match DMC exactly?
Yes. The layout is drawn directly in DMC colours, so the floss list contains exactly the colours of the palette you choose — no extra shades are created.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. Your photo is processed entirely in your browser on your own device. It is never uploaded to a server, so private family and pet photos stay private.
How do I print the pattern or save it as a PDF?
Click "Print / Save PDF". The pattern is split into numbered pages with a cover page showing the preview, finished size and floss list. In the print dialog, choose your printer or "Save as PDF".
How accurate are the DMC colors?
DMC does not publish official RGB values, so all on-screen floss colors are close approximations. Colors are matched in the CIE Lab color space for perceptual accuracy, but always compare real skeins in daylight before buying in bulk.
