Tips for wedding sampler patterns
A wedding sampler records the couple's names, the date and sometimes the venue or a line from the vows, framed by a border. It makes a lasting wedding or anniversary gift, and because the text is personal it is one of the few designs you can't buy ready-made. Type the names and date below and the maker draws a double border with a dotted inner line, a pair of hearts above the names and a row of alternating hearts along the bottom.
Use "&" between the names: it is part of the stitch alphabet. Short names are drawn at double size; if both names together are too long for the frame width, they drop to normal size automatically and the sampler widens to fit, so a long venue line never gets cut off.
The design uses three DMC colours — border, accent and text — and leaves the background unstitched, so it looks equally good on white Aida, antique white or natural linen. Change the fabric colour in the tool to preview it.
Recommended settings
- Use & between the names
- Three colours keep it elegant
- Linen or 28-count evenweave over two
- Frame 2–3 in wider than the stitching
Size
The example chart above, with the names at double size, is 154 × 82 stitches: 11 × 5.9 in (27.9 × 14.9 cm) on 14-count Aida or on 28-count evenweave stitched over two, and 9.6 × 5.1 in on 32-count linen over two. If the names are long they switch to the normal-size alphabet and the sampler becomes narrower but less bold. Allow at least 3 in (8 cm) of fabric on every side, more if you plan a deep mat.
| Fabric | Finished size | Metric | Fabric to cut (+3 in / 8 cm each side) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11-count Aida | 14 × 7.5 in | 35.6 × 18.9 cm | 20 × 13.5 in (52 × 35 cm) |
| 14-count Aida | 11 × 5.9 in | 27.9 × 14.9 cm | 17 × 11.9 in (44 × 31 cm) |
| 16-count Aida | 9.6 × 5.1 in | 24.4 × 13 cm | 15.6 × 11.1 in (40 × 29 cm) |
| 18-count Aida | 8.6 × 4.6 in | 21.7 × 11.6 cm | 14.6 × 10.6 in (38 × 28 cm) |
| 28-count evenweave (over 2) | 11 × 5.9 in | 27.9 × 14.9 cm | 17 × 11.9 in (44 × 31 cm) |
Colours
Classic samplers use a deep red border (DMC 498) with a brighter red accent (321) and very dark brown text (3371), which looks softer than pure black. For a modern wedding, sage green with gold (3768 + 3045) or blush with gray (778 + 3778 + 3799) pick up common wedding palettes. Match one colour to the wedding flowers for a personal touch.
| Palette | Border | Text | Accent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic red | DMC 498 Red Dark | DMC 3371 Black Brown | DMC 321 Red |
| Sage & gold | DMC 3768 Gray Green Dark | DMC 3371 Black Brown | DMC 3045 Yellow Beige Dk |
| Blush & gray | DMC 778 Antique Mauve Vy Lt | DMC 3799 Pewter Gray Vy Dk | DMC 3778 Terra Cotta Light |
The example chart uses 3 colours and 2,588 full stitches: 1,136 in DMC 498, 1,119 in DMC 3371, 333 in DMC 321. Every colour needs one skein or less except large filled areas — the floss list under the tool gives the exact skein count for your fabric.
Layout
Centre the names on the horizontal centre line of the fabric, then build the border outwards and check that it meets at the corners before filling the motifs. Keep text lines at least six rows apart. If you add the venue, keep it shorter than the names line so the composition narrows towards the bottom like a traditional sampler.
Once the chart is ready, see how to transfer a cross stitch pattern onto fabric for centring and gridding, and the metric size calculator to plan frames in centimetres.
How to make a cross stitch pattern from a photo
- Add your photo. Click Upload photo, drag a file onto the preview, or paste with Ctrl/⌘+V. JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC (where supported) work.
- Set size and colors. Choose the width in stitches and the maximum number of DMC colors. The finished size updates for the fabric you pick.
- Clean up. Keep Remove confetti on Light or Strong, adjust brightness or contrast, and click colors in the floss list to leave them unstitched.
- Print or save. Click Print / Save PDF for a cover page with floss list plus numbered symbol chart pages, or download a PNG chart.
FAQ
How do I make a wedding sampler cross stitch pattern?
A wedding sampler records the couple's names, the date and sometimes the venue or a line from the vows, framed by a border. It makes a lasting wedding or anniversary gift, and because the text is personal it is one of the few designs you can't buy ready-made. Type the names and date below and the maker draws a double border with a dotted inner line, a pair of hearts above the names and a row of alternating hearts along the bottom.
Can I change the font or add my own motif?
The maker uses one clean 5 × 7 stitch alphabet. To add your own motif or a different font, download the PNG chart, edit it in any pixel editor and upload it again — or add the motif by hand on the printed chart.
Will the text colours match DMC exactly?
Yes. The layout is drawn directly in DMC colours, so the floss list contains exactly the colours of the palette you choose — no extra shades are created.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. Your photo is processed entirely in your browser on your own device. It is never uploaded to a server, so private family and pet photos stay private.
How do I print the pattern or save it as a PDF?
Click "Print / Save PDF". The pattern is split into numbered pages with a cover page showing the preview, finished size and floss list. In the print dialog, choose your printer or "Save as PDF".
How accurate are the DMC colors?
DMC does not publish official RGB values, so all on-screen floss colors are close approximations. Colors are matched in the CIE Lab color space for perceptual accuracy, but always compare real skeins in daylight before buying in bulk.
