Ten is when most children are ready for backwards words. Reading a word right to left or bottom to top asks the brain to reverse a sequence it has just learned to read one way, and by fifth grade that is a satisfying challenge rather than a frustrating one. These puzzles use the Hard setting: all eight directions in a 13 × 13 grid.
With backwards words in play, teach the "rare letter" strategy: instead of hunting for the first letter of SKELETON, look for the K, which is less common in the filler. Every puzzle on this site fills empty squares with letters in roughly the proportions of normal English text, so a rare letter really does stand out.
Topics now come straight from the curriculum — the human body, ancient Egypt, rainforests. Word searches make a calm starter or exit task for those units, and they work well as a quiet activity for mixed-age groups because a 10 year old can help a younger sibling with an easier page.

Younger: word search for 9 year olds. Older: word search for 11 year olds. Why these settings? See word search difficulty levels explained.
A 13 × 13 grid with 15 words of 5–9 letters, hidden all 8 directions, including backwards. That leaves roughly half the squares as filler, which keeps the puzzle fair without giving words away.
About 20 minutes for the puzzles on this page. Faster than that means it is time to move up a level; much slower or lots of help needed means stepping down to the 9-year-old settings.
