Nine year olds read fluently and can tackle vocabulary from science and history lessons — GLACIER, PLATEAU, CENTAUR. We keep the Medium directions (no backwards words) but raise the grid to 12 × 12 and the list to fourteen words, which is a fifteen-to-twenty-minute puzzle for most fourth graders.
At this age, the best word searches double as vocabulary practice. Before starting, read the list together and ask which words they already know; afterwards, have them choose two unfamiliar words and look them up. A list such as "Planet Earth" introduces landform words that turn up again in geography lessons.
If a 9 year old breezes through these, the next step is Hard (all eight directions). Some children are ready by nine, others by ten or eleven. A good test is to hand them one Hard puzzle: if they find more than two thirds of the words without help, switch up; if not, stay on Medium a little longer.

A 12 × 12 grid with 14 words of 5–8 letters, hidden across, down and diagonal. That leaves roughly half the squares as filler, which keeps the puzzle fair without giving words away.
About 15–20 minutes for the puzzles on this page. Faster than that means it is time to move up a level; much slower or lots of help needed means stepping down to the 8-year-old settings.
