What works for 6 year olds

Six year olds are usually in their first year of formal reading. They can decode simple words and are starting to recognise common spelling patterns, so five-letter words such as TOAST and SNAIL become possible. The grid grows to 9 × 9 and the list to eight or nine words, but the directions stay across and down only — diagonals still trip up most first graders.

Use topics from everyday life. Words a child says every day (breakfast foods, bath time, the bugs in the garden) are easier to find because the child can predict the spelling. A good habit to teach now is "first letter, second letter": find the first letter, then check the square to the right and the square below for the second letter.

Ten minutes is a realistic attention span. Many 6 year olds like to cross words off the list as they go, which helps them track what is left. If the puzzle is finished quickly, ask them to read the leftover letters in a row out loud — spotting accidental short words (AT, IN, UP) is good phonics practice too.

Quick tips

  • Teach "first letter, then neighbour"
  • Cross words off the list as you go
  • Everyday topics are easiest
  • Across and down only

FAQ

What size word search is right for a 6 year old?

A 9 × 9 grid with 8–9 words of 3–5 letters, hidden across and down. That leaves roughly half the squares as filler, which keeps the puzzle fair without giving words away.

How long should a 6 year old take?

About 10 minutes for the puzzles on this page. Faster than that means it is time to move up a level; much slower or lots of help needed means stepping down to the 5-year-old settings.

Are these word searches free to print?

Yes. All three puzzles and their answer keys are free to print, save as PDF, download as PNG or play online, for home or classroom use, with no sign-up.

Can I change the words?

Yes. Click Customize under any puzzle to open it in the maker, or use the 6-year-old settings link below to start a new puzzle with the same grid size and difficulty.
