Eight is the age when diagonal words start to feel fair. Third graders scan systematically, can keep their place in a grid and know to check the squares around a starting letter in more than two directions. These puzzles use the Medium setting: across, down, diagonally down and diagonally up, but still never backwards.
Twelve words in an 11 × 11 grid leaves about half the squares as filler, which is the balance we use for every age: denser grids give words away, sparser ones become a slog. Words grow to seven letters (LANTERN, SPATULA, JAVELIN), so children practise multi-syllable spelling while they search.
Third graders enjoy topic puzzles that connect to something they are doing — a camping trip, cooking with a parent, sports day at school. After finishing, ask them to sort the words into groups (things you cook with, things you eat with) or to pick three words and use them in one silly sentence.

Younger: word search for 7 year olds. Older: word search for 9 year olds. Why these settings? See word search difficulty levels explained.
A 11 × 11 grid with 12 words of 4–7 letters, hidden across, down and diagonal. That leaves roughly half the squares as filler, which keeps the puzzle fair without giving words away.
About 15 minutes for the puzzles on this page. Faster than that means it is time to move up a level; much slower or lots of help needed means stepping down to the 7-year-old settings.
