What works for 7 year olds

By seven, most children read simple chapter books and can hold a six-letter word such as BREEZE or OYSTER in mind while they scan. That makes a 10 × 10 grid with ten words the sweet spot: big enough to feel like a real puzzle, small enough to finish in one sitting without frustration.

We keep 7-year-old puzzles on the Easy setting (across and down) but use longer, less predictable words — CHILLY, SPHERE, SQUID — so the challenge comes from spelling rather than direction. Once a child finishes these quickly and without help, switch the maker to Medium so words can also run diagonally; for many children that happens around their eighth birthday.

Seven year olds love speed. A kitchen timer turns the puzzle into a race against their own best time, and the online play mode records how long they took. For spelling practice, ask them to write each word they find on the back of the page — the search is recognition, the writing is recall.

A 10 × 10 grid with 10 words of 4–6 letters, hidden across and down. That leaves roughly half the squares as filler, which keeps the puzzle fair without giving words away.

How long should a 7 year old take?

About 10–15 minutes for the puzzles on this page. Faster than that means it is time to move up a level; much slower or lots of help needed means stepping down to the 6-year-old settings.
