What works for 11 year olds
Eleven year olds are confident readers who can work with subject vocabulary such as DECOMPOSER, POLLINATOR or PERCUSSION. Long words are actually easier to spot than short ones once a solver knows the trick of scanning for a distinctive letter pair, so the challenge at this age comes from the number of words and the size of the grid: sixteen words in 14 × 14.
These puzzles fit naturally into upper-primary and early middle-school lessons. Use "Ecosystems" before a food-web lesson to pre-teach the key terms, or "Music" as a sub-plan activity. Because every word appears exactly once and the answer key is on its own page, students can check their own work.
Many 11 year olds enjoy making puzzles as much as solving them. Ask them to choose sixteen words from a topic, type them into the maker and swap puzzles with a partner — choosing words that are not inside each other (like ROVER inside ROVERS) is a surprisingly good spelling exercise.

FAQ
What size word search is right for a 11 year old?
A 14 × 14 grid with 16 words of 6–10 letters, hidden all 8 directions, including backwards. That leaves roughly half the squares as filler, which keeps the puzzle fair without giving words away.
How long should a 11 year old take?
About 20–25 minutes for the puzzles on this page. Faster than that means it is time to move up a level; much slower or lots of help needed means stepping down to the 10-year-old settings.
Are these word searches free to print?
Yes. All three puzzles and their answer keys are free to print, save as PDF, download as PNG or play online, for home or classroom use, with no sign-up.
Can I change the words?
Yes. Click Customize under any puzzle to open it in the maker, or use the 11-year-old settings link below to start a new puzzle with the same grid size and difficulty.
