M4A to M4R converter

An M4A and an M4R are the same kind of file — AAC audio in an MPEG-4 container. What turns an M4A into a working ringtone is the length (40 seconds or less) and the .m4r extension.

How to convert M4A to M4R

  1. Open the M4A file. Click Open file or drop it on the editor. It is decoded locally.
  2. Choose what to keep. The loudest 30 seconds are selected automatically — drag to change it.
  3. Check the settings. Format is set to M4R at 192 kbps. Add fades or Normalize if you like.
  4. Download. Click Download M4R.

About M4A to M4R conversion

If your M4A is already shorter than 40 seconds, renaming it to .m4r often works. Most songs and voice memos are longer, though, and Finder silently refuses ringtones over the limit. This converter trims the clip, adds a fade so it loops cleanly, and re-encodes it at 192 kbps.

GarageBand projects, Voice Memos and music you have downloaded as M4A all work. Tracks from Apple Music are DRM-protected and can’t be converted by any tool.

FAQ

Is M4A the same as M4R?

The audio format is identical (AAC in MPEG-4). Only the extension differs: .m4r tells iTunes and Finder the file is a ringtone.

Why won’t my M4R sync?

It is probably longer than 40 seconds, or it is an MP3 that was renamed. Trim it here and export again.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Audio is decoded, edited and encoded in your browser with the Web Audio API, WebCodecs and a JavaScript MP3 encoder. Nothing is sent to a server, so it also works on slow connections once the page has loaded.

Which formats can I open?

Anything your browser can decode: MP3, WAV, M4A/AAC, OGG Vorbis, Opus and FLAC, plus the audio track of MP4, MOV and WebM videos. Chrome and Edge support the widest range.
