How it works

Cutting an MP3 is the most common audio edit there is: removing a long intro, keeping only a chorus, splitting a voice memo or shortening a sound effect. This cutter decodes the MP3 in your browser with the Web Audio API, shows the full waveform, and lets you set the start and end either by dragging or by typing times like 1:23.45.

Because MP3 is a lossy format, any cut that changes the audio (fades, volume, or a cut point that is not on an MP3 frame boundary) is re-encoded. Choose 192 kbps for everyday listening, or 256–320 kbps if the source was high quality and you want to keep as much of it as possible. Re-encoding a 128 kbps file at 320 kbps will not add quality back, so match or slightly exceed the original bitrate.

Clicks at the start or end of a cut happen when the waveform is chopped mid-swing. Add a fade of even 0.1 seconds and they disappear; for music, a 1–3 second fade out sounds natural. Use Trim silence to remove dead air from both ends of the selection in one click.

Recommended settings

  • Use 192 kbps for most music, 320 kbps for archiving
  • Add a short fade to avoid clicks at the cut
  • Type times as seconds (83.5) or minutes (1:23.5)
  • Use Zoom to selection for frame-accurate edges

Need several files from one recording? Cut an MP3 into parts. Step-by-step for your device: iPhone · Android · Mac · Windows · Chromebook.

Step by step

  1. Open your audio. Click Open file or drop an MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG, FLAC or video file onto the page. It is decoded in your browser and never uploaded.
  2. Select the part to keep. Drag across the waveform, drag the handles, or type exact start and end times. Use Find loudest part or a length preset such as 30 s for ringtones.
  3. Add fades and set the volume. Set fade in and fade out lengths, then tick Normalize or adjust Volume. Press Play to preview exactly what will be exported.
  4. Download. Choose MP3, WAV, M4A or M4R, type a name and click Download.

FAQ

Does cutting an MP3 reduce quality?

Any MP3 edit that is re-encoded loses a little quality, just like saving a JPEG again. At 192 kbps or higher the difference is inaudible for most listeners. For a perfect copy of the cut, export WAV instead.

Is there a file size limit?

Files up to 500 MB can be opened. Because everything happens on your device, the practical limit is your browser’s memory: a one-hour MP3 uses about 1.3 GB of memory once decoded.

Can I cut an MP3 on my phone?

Yes. The cutter works in Safari on iPhone and Chrome on Android. Tap Open file, choose the MP3 from Files or Downloads, and drag the handles to select.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Audio is decoded, edited and encoded in your browser with the Web Audio API, WebCodecs and a JavaScript MP3 encoder. Nothing is sent to a server, so it also works on slow connections once the page has loaded.

Which formats can I open?

Anything your browser can decode: MP3, WAV, M4A/AAC, OGG Vorbis, Opus and FLAC, plus the audio track of MP4, MOV and WebM videos. Chrome and Edge support the widest range.
