How it works

Video files carry their sound as a separate audio track, usually AAC inside an MP4 or MOV, or Opus inside WebM. Your browser can decode that track directly, so the tool reads the audio from the video without uploading anything — useful for large phone videos that would take minutes to upload elsewhere.

Which video formats open depends on the browser. Chrome and Edge read MP4, MOV (H.264 with AAC audio) and WebM; Safari reads MP4 and MOV; Firefox reads MP4 and WebM. If a file won’t open, it may use a codec such as AC-3 (Dolby Digital) that browsers can’t decode.

Phone videos are typically recorded at 48 kHz. The audio is decoded at 44.1 kHz, the standard rate for MP3 and ringtones, which is inaudible as a change for spoken word and music.

Recommended settings

  • MP4 and MOV from phones work in Chrome and Safari
  • Trim first to keep only the part you need
  • Use WAV if you will edit the audio further
  • Only use videos you have the right to use

Step by step

  1. Open your audio. Click Open file or drop an MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG, FLAC or video file onto the page. It is decoded in your browser and never uploaded.
  2. Select the part to keep. Drag across the waveform, drag the handles, or type exact start and end times. Use Find loudest part or a length preset such as 30 s for ringtones.
  3. Add fades and set the volume. Set fade in and fade out lengths, then tick Normalize or adjust Volume. Press Play to preview exactly what will be exported.
  4. Download. Choose MP3, WAV, M4A or M4R, type a name and click Download.

FAQ

How do I convert MP4 to MP3 without uploading?

Open the MP4 here, keep the whole selection (or trim it), choose MP3 and click Download. Decoding and encoding both run on your device.

Why can’t my video be opened?

The audio track may use a codec your browser can’t decode, such as AC-3/E-AC-3 from TV recordings, or the file may be DRM-protected. Try Chrome, or convert the video with a desktop tool first.

Can I extract audio from a YouTube video?

Only from a video file you have on your device and the right to use. This tool doesn’t download from websites.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Audio is decoded, edited and encoded in your browser with the Web Audio API, WebCodecs and a JavaScript MP3 encoder. Nothing is sent to a server, so it also works on slow connections once the page has loaded.

Which formats can I open?

Anything your browser can decode: MP3, WAV, M4A/AAC, OGG Vorbis, Opus and FLAC, plus the audio track of MP4, MOV and WebM videos. Chrome and Edge support the widest range.
