How to cut an MP3 on iPhone
- Put the MP3 in Files. The editor can only open files the Files app can see. Save the MP3 from Mail, Messages or a download to Files; for a voice memo, tap ⋯ in Voice Memos and choose Save to Files.
- Open it in Safari. Tap Open file on this page and choose Browse (or Choose File). Pick the MP3 from iCloud Drive, On My iPhone or Downloads.
- Select the part to keep. Drag the two handles on the waveform, or tap the Start and End boxes and type times such as 1:05.5. Tap Play to hear the selection.
- Download. Tap Download MP3, then Download in Safari’s prompt. The file is saved to the Downloads folder in Files.
Where the cut file goes
Safari saves downloads to Files → iCloud Drive → Downloads by default. You can change that in Settings → Apps → Safari → Downloads (Settings → Safari → Downloads on iOS 17 and earlier) — choosing On My iPhone keeps large files off iCloud. Tap the download arrow in Safari’s address bar to jump straight to the file.
The iPhone’s Music app can’t import an MP3 that is already on the phone; it only plays files synced from a computer or bought from Apple. To listen to your cut, tap it in Files (Quick Look plays it), or share it to an app such as VLC or a podcast player.
What works on iPhone
| Task | Works in Safari? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Open MP3, M4A, WAV, voice memos | Yes | Files must be in the Files app first |
| Open the sound of a video | Yes | Choose Photo Library in the picker |
| Save MP3 or WAV | Yes | Encoded on the phone |
| Save M4A / M4R | Depends on iOS | Needs an AAC encoder in Safari; if the option is greyed out, use MP3 |
| Long files (1 h+) | Slow | Older iPhones may run out of memory; cut on a computer instead |
Turn the cut into a ringtone
On iOS 26 or later, keep the selection under 30 seconds, download it, open it in Files, tap Share and choose Use as Ringtone. Longer clips are refused, so 29 seconds is a safe target. On older versions, import the file into GarageBand and share it as a ringtone (GarageBand allows up to 30 seconds). The iPhone ringtone maker pre-selects the loudest 29 seconds and adds fades for you, and the iPhone ringtone guide walks through every method.
Tips for touch screens
- Pinch-zooming the page doesn’t zoom the waveform — tap Zoom to selection instead, then drag the handles for fine edges.
- Typing exact times is usually faster than dragging on a small screen.
- Keep Safari in the foreground while a long file encodes; iOS may pause background tabs.

FAQ
Do I need an app to cut an MP3 on iPhone?
No. This page works in Safari (and Chrome for iOS). The MP3 is decoded and re-encoded on the phone, and the result is saved to the Files app.
Why can’t I find my song when I tap Open file?
The picker shows the Files app, not the Music library. Songs synced to the Music app or streamed from Apple Music can’t be opened by any web tool; use an MP3 you have as a file.
Can I trim a voice memo on iPhone and keep it as MP3?
Yes. In Voice Memos tap ⋯ → Save to Files, open the memo here, select the part you need and download it as MP3, or as M4A if your Safari offers it.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Audio is decoded, edited and encoded in your browser with the Web Audio API, WebCodecs and a JavaScript MP3 encoder. Nothing is sent to a server, so it also works on slow connections once the page has loaded.
