Random Noise dithering online
Apply random (white noise) dithering to images. Gritty, film-grain style results. Free online tool, no upload required.
About Random Noise dithering
Random dithering adds a random offset to every pixel before quantizing. It is the oldest and simplest dithering method — and the noisiest.
The result looks like heavy film grain or photocopy noise. It rarely beats error diffusion for fidelity, but it is a great stylistic effect for gritty, analog-looking artwork.
Diffusion kernel
threshold = 0.5 + random(-0.5, 0.5)
“*” marks the current pixel; numbers show how much of its quantization error each neighbour receives.
Best for
- Gritty photocopy look
- Grain overlays
- Experimental art
How to dither an image
- Add your image. Click Upload image, drag a file onto the preview, or paste with Ctrl/⌘+V. JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF work.
- Pick an algorithm and palette. Error diffusion (Floyd–Steinberg, Atkinson…) for photos, Bayer for a retro crosshatch.
- Tune it. Raise pixel size for chunkier pixels; adjust brightness and contrast to control which tones become dark or light.
- Download. Export a lossless PNG at up to 8× with crisp nearest-neighbour scaling.
