Plywood calculator: how many sheets do I need?

A quick area-based estimate for floors, walls, roofs and shop projects. For furniture and cabinets, follow up with the cut list optimizer for an exact count.

Presets:

Area: 96.0 sq ft · sheet: 32.00 sq ft
You need about 4 sheets (3.30 with 10% waste)

Calculators by job

The presets above load a typical job into this quick area calculator. For the details that change the count — roof pitch and overhang, wall openings and gable ends, panel thickness by joist spacing, or real cabinet and bookcase parts — use the dedicated calculators:

When to use the cut list optimizer instead

An area estimate works when sheets go up whole and offcuts are small — subfloors, sheathing, shop walls. When parts are cut from the sheet, the shape of each part matters more than its area. The sheet cut list optimizer places real parts with saw kerf and grain direction, and often shows that a project needs one sheet more (or fewer) than the area suggests. See plywood sizes and thicknesses for which sheets are available.

FAQ

How many sheets of plywood do I need?

Divide the area you need to cover by the area of one sheet (32 sq ft for a 4×8) and add 10–15% for waste, then round up. For furniture and cabinets, where parts must fit around each other, use the cut list optimizer instead of an area estimate.

How many square feet is a sheet of plywood?

A 4×8 sheet is 32 square feet (2.97 m²). A 4×10 is 40 sq ft, a 5×5 is 25 sq ft and a metric 2440 × 1220 mm board is 2.98 m².

Why is an area estimate not enough for cabinets?

Area ignores shape. A 72 × 12-inch part has only 6 square feet, but it needs a 72-inch length of the sheet. Cut lists with long or wide parts can need one or two sheets more than the area suggests.
