4×8 sheet cut list optimizer
The 4×8 sheet — 48 × 96 inches — is the standard panel size for plywood, MDF, OSB, melamine and hardboard across North America. Enter your parts below to see exactly how they fit on a 4×8 sheet and how many sheets to buy.

Cut sequence (17 cuts)
- Crosscut 30″ from the 96″ × 48″ piece

- Rip 11 1/4″ from the 30″ × 25 3/8″ piece
- Rip 11 1/4″ from the 30″ × 14″ piece
- Crosscut 24″ from the 65 7/8″ × 48″ piece
- Rip 12″ from the 24″ × 48″ piece
- Rip 11 1/4″ from the 24″ × 35 7/8″ piece
- Crosscut 22 1/2″ from the 24″ × 11 1/4″ piece

- Crosscut 22 1/2″ from the 24″ × 11 1/4″ piece
- Rip 11 1/4″ from the 24″ × 13 1/8″ piece
- Crosscut 22 1/2″ from the 24″ × 11 1/4″ piece
- Crosscut 3″ from the 41 3/4″ × 48″ piece
- Rip 22 1/2″ from the 3″ × 48″ piece
- Rip 22 1/2″ from the 3″ × 25 3/8″ piece
- Rip 11 1/4″ from the 38 5/8″ × 48″ piece
- Crosscut 22 1/2″ from the 38 5/8″ × 11 1/4″ piece
Every cut goes straight through the piece. Distances are measured from the top or left edge of the piece as drawn; the kerf is on the waste side of each line.

4×8 sheet at a glance
| Size | 48 × 96 in |
|---|---|
| Also written | 1219 × 2438 mm |
| Area | 32 sq ft (2.97 m²) |
| Kerf used below | 1/8″ |
A full 4×8 sheet covers 32 square feet (2.97 m²). In practice you lose a little to every saw cut: with a 1/8-inch blade, four rips across the 48-inch width cost 3/8 inch, which is why four 12-inch strips fit but four 12 1/4-inch strips do not. The tables below are calculated with the same engine as the optimizer, so the counts already include kerf.
On veneered plywood the face grain almost always runs along the 96-inch length. Cabinet sides, doors and shelves usually need their length to follow that grain, which limits how parts can be rotated. Tick Grain on those parts and the optimizer will keep them aligned; leave it off for hidden parts and let them rotate into the gaps.
A 3/4-inch sheet weighs roughly 60–75 lb for plywood and 90–100 lb for MDF, so most woodworkers break a 4×8 down into smaller pieces with a circular or track saw before moving to the table saw. The numbered cut sequence starts with the long rips that make this easy, and many home centers will make a few rough cuts for you if you bring the first rips of your layout.

How many parts fit on one sheet?
Calculated with the optimizer for a single sheet, 1/8″ kerf and straight through-cuts. "Grain locked" keeps the part length along the sheet length; "rotation allowed" applies to MDF, melamine and hidden parts.
| Part | Size | Grain locked | Rotation allowed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base cabinet side | 34 1/2″ × 23 1/4″ | 4 | 5 |
| Wall cabinet side | 30″ × 11 1/4″ | 12 | 12 |
| Bookcase shelf | 34 1/2″ × 11 1/4″ | 8 | 10 |
| Cabinet door | 30″ × 15″ | 9 | 9 |
| Drawer side | 22″ × 6″ | 28 | 30 |
| 24 × 24 panel | 24″ × 24″ | 3 | 3 |
| 12 × 12 square | 12″ × 12″ | 21 | 21 |

FAQ
What are the dimensions of a 4x8 sheet?
48 × 96 inches (1219 × 2438 mm), an area of 32 sq ft (2.97 m²).
How many 12″ strips can I rip from a 4x8 sheet?
3 full-length strips with a 1/8″ kerf. The last strip needs no cut, and the leftover is 11 3/4″.
How many base cabinet side fit on one 4x8 sheet?
4 with the grain locked, or 5 if the parts may rotate (34 1/2″ × 23 1/4″ parts, 1/8″ kerf, straight through-cuts).
Which way does the grain run on a 4x8 sheet?
On veneered plywood the face grain normally runs along the 96″ length.
