Assumptions
- Cabinet opening 22 1/2 inches; side-mount slides need 1/2 inch per side, so boxes are 21 1/2 inches wide.
- Sides run the full 21-inch depth; fronts and backs fit between them (21 1/2 − 2 × 1/2 = 20 1/2 inches).
- Bottoms sit in a 1/4-inch groove, 1/4 inch deep on all four sides.
- Grain runs along the length of every side, front and back.
Planning tips
Drawer boxes are where Baltic birch shines: the edges look good with a clear finish, the plies hold fasteners well, and the parts are narrow strips that rip efficiently from a 5×5 sheet. All the sides, fronts and backs for four drawers come from a single 1/2-inch sheet.
The 1/4-inch groove for the bottom is usually 1/2 inch up from the lower edge. Cut all grooves with the same fence setting before assembly so every bottom slides in.
