Minecraft map art generator
Turn a picture into blocks that show up on in-game maps. Pick flat or staircase, set how many maps, and get every block, its height and the full material list.
1 map = 128 × 128 blocks. The image is cropped to fill the maps.

How map art works
A map shows each block from above as one pixel in that block’s map color. It shades each pixel by comparing the block’s height with the block directly to its north: higher is light, level is normal, lower is dark. Flat map art keeps everything level and uses the normal shade; staircase map art steps blocks up and down to choose any of the three shades.
The generator calculates the lowest possible heights for staircase builds — consecutive level blocks share a height and long descents restart from the ground — and shows the tallest column in the info line. Read staircase vs flat for the full explanation.
Building tips
- Make an empty map at your site first and build inside its edges.
- Build the noobline (one row north of the image) before anything else.
- Place leaves by hand so they never decay, and avoid water — it isn’t used by this generator.
- Lock the finished map at a cartography table with a glass pane.
FAQ
What is a noobline?
An extra row of blocks one block north of your map art. The map shades each block by comparing its height with the block to its north, so the first row needs a neighbour at the right height. The generator adds it to the material list and row guide.
Staircase or flat?
Flat is a single layer with about 60 colors — easiest in survival. Staircase varies heights to show three shades per color (about 180), which looks much better for photos but builds tall columns.
How big is one map?
One map at zoom level 0 covers 128 × 128 blocks. Choose maps across and down to build 2 × 1, 2 × 2 or larger map walls.
Does it work for Bedrock Edition?
Yes. The palettes, block counts and row guide are the same on Bedrock and Java. The .schem schematic export is for Java mods such as WorldEdit; Bedrock players build from the grid PNG and row guide.
