About terracotta pixel art

Terracotta comes in 16 dyed colors plus plain terracotta. Badlands (mesa) biomes contain huge amounts of naturally colored terracotta, and you can smelt clay into terracotta and dye eight at a time. The palette is less saturated than wool or concrete, which is exactly what portraits and natural scenes need.

Skin tones are where terracotta shines: white, pink, orange, light gray and brown terracotta between them cover most complexions with subtle steps. Mix it with concrete using the “All full blocks” palette for the best of both.

Terracotta does not burn and needs a pickaxe, so it is as durable as concrete. Avoid glazed terracotta for pixel art — its patterns read as noise from a distance — which is why this generator only uses the plain dyed blocks.

FAQ

How many colors does the terracotta palette have?

17 blocks. Each pixel of your image is matched to the closest of them in the CIE Lab color space.

How many blocks do I need?

One block per pixel: width × height. A 64 × 64 build needs 4,096 blocks — 64 stacks, or about 2.4 shulker boxes. The material list shows the exact count for every block, split into shulker boxes, stacks and leftover blocks.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser. Your image never leaves your device, and there is no account or watermark.
